Sun Songs is a project that seeks to harness a snapshot of the sun’s energy, in various geographical locations, and translate them into musical expression. Working with two engineers from Spitfire Audio, we have designed and created an instrument that records sunlight data which is converted into midi, in turn composing soundscapes of sunrises in Los Angeles, Vérignon, Barcelona, London and Tokyo. The intention is to create a body of work that explores and records the current lumen levels of the sun’s emissions; sonically conveying an organic presence representing our natural climate, whilst also representing our technological climate crisis with the use of midi data driven electronic sound beds.
The instrument has two modes, a recording mode which tracks a set of values over time which then gets output to midi, and a live mode which triggers samples and affects a set of parameters on the fly. In live mode, the sounds and music generated are based on the lumen levels of that environment throughout the performance.
EP features Strings by Rob Ames | London Contemporary Orchestra.
Release TBC 2020.
